Xiaogan University, a provincial regular multi-disciplinary comprehensive university, was established under the approval of Ministry of Education in March 2000. The university dates back to The Third Provincial Teacher-training School, which was founded in 1943 .Later, it changed its name several times before it was named Xiaogan University in March 2000: Xiaogan University , Xiaogan Branch Of Wuhan Normal College, Xiaogan Normal College. In 1986,Hubei Vocational-Technical Normal College was merged into Xiaogan Normal College. In 1999,The Southern Urban-Rural Construction School Of Ministry Of Construction was merged into Xiaogan Normal college (named Xiaogan University hereinafter).It has a history of over 64 years.

Xiaogan University is located in the beautiful urban of Xiaogan City, Hubei Province, covering a total area of 814,000 square metres , with a total floor space of 432,000 square metres. Currently the university staff has reached the number of 971, among them 640 people are full time teachers,267 people have senior professional titles,317 people have got or are earning Master’s or Doctor’s degrees. The university has 37 undergraduate specialties,15 academic schools and departments covering 8 disciplines: economics, law , education, literature, science, engineering, agriculture. The university enrolls students from 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions .A t present the university , in total ,has 13,000 resident students.

Hubei Township Development Research Center, Hubei Plant Diseases and Pests Monitoring and Safety-controlling Laboratory, Hubei Demonstration Centre for Fundamental Chemistry Teaching & Learning Experiments and other 50-odd research institutions and laboratories are local here. The university has a standard playground and well-equipped sports facilities. The university’s library has a collection of approximately 841,000 volumes.

The university is adhering to the opening-up policy in running the school and active in setting up international academic exchanges and co-operation. It has established friendly and cooperative relations with various universities of America, Belarus and other foreign counties. More than 40 foreign experts from USA, UK, France, Japan, and Australia have been invited to give lectures or teach here successively while large numbers of teachers have been sent to foreign countries to study, work and give lectures.
